Gardaí could probe soldier’s death

AN independent report into the death of an Irish soldier in South Lebanon in 1999 has called for Defence Minister Willie O’Dea to consider asking the gardaí to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

Private Kevin Barrett died from a single gunshot wound to the head while serving with the 84th Irish Battallion UNIFIL.

Private Barrett was in his billet with two other Irish soldiers, all of whom had consumed numerous cans of beer.
