Gardaí appeal for witnesses to serious sex assault
The woman, in her 20s, was walking home from Grand Parade in Cork city at around 2am.
She was passing the Lough Church on Bandon Road when a man approached her looking for a light for a cigarette.
He then forced into the grounds of the church and sexually assaulted her.
Gardaí in Barrack Street were called to the scene and the woman was taken to Cork University Hospital. She was in a distressed state and was unable to provide any details about her attacker.
Gardaí have taken forensic samples from the scene and the investigation is continuing.
They are appealing to anyone who heard or noticed anything suspicious to come forward.
“We have received a lot of help from the public but we need more witnesses,” a spokesman said.
Gardaí can be contacted at Anglesea Street at 021 4522000 or on the Garda Confidential line at 1800 666111.
