Gardaí probe shooting attacks in Dublin, Cork and Kerry

GARDAÍ were yesterday conducting investigations into three separate shootings in Dublin, Cork and Kerry.

The incidents follow a weekend of violence which left one man dead and another seriously injured.

Detectives said they were following a definite line of inquiry in relation to a gun attack on a house in Dublin in which a woman nearly lost an eye.

The mother received injuries to her eye in the blast at her home in Coolock while her daughter sustained minor head injuries.

Gardaí in Coolock said shots were fired into the front door of a house in Moateview Court at around 12.40am. The mother and daughter were taken to Beaumont Hospital.

The daughter was later released and her mother’s eye injuries were said not to be serious.

Sources said the shooting may be linked to a disturbance in a pub earlier that evening.

In Cork a woman in her 20s and her two young children had a lucky escape when a gunman pumped three shots into her city home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardaí investigating the shooting said it was fortunate nobody was injured.

Two shots were fired through windows and a third through the front door of the house at Ardcullen Estate, Knocknaheeny.

Detectives believe the attack took place around 1.15am but are not sure if it was carried out by more than one gunman.

“We are following a number of different lines of inquiry but haven’t narrowed it down,” a spokesman said.

He added that the motive for the attack was unclear.

Forensic experts sealed off the house and carried out a detailed examination.

Detectives also carried out house-to-house enquiries in the estate.

It is understood the woman and her children have since moved from the house.

“This could have had very serious repercussions,” the garda spokesman added.

Gardaí are appealing for anybody who was in Ardcullen Estate between 12.30am and 1.30am and saw anything suspicious to contact them.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station at (021) 4395540.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Kerry are investigating a shooting incident in Killarney yesterday morning.

A garda spokesman said a lone gunman fired a shot through a front bedroom window at Hazelwood Drive shortly after 1am.

There were a number of occupants in the house, but no one was injured. The attacker is believed to have fled on foot.

Anyone with information is asked to ring Killarney station at (064) 31222.

In Sligo, gardaí are continuing to investigate a double shooting on Sunday morning, which left two brothers injured, one of them seriously. In Mayo, an inquiry continued into a fatal assault on Liam McDonnell in Castlebar on Sunday.
