Crash witness yet to come forward

Gardaí investigating the fatal crash outside Navan are appealing to a lorry driver who was at the scene to contact them.

Sources close to the investigation said it is incredible the driver of the sand or gravel lorry has not made himself available to the investigation team.

It may be he feels that he has no information to add or is fearful because of some problem with his own vehicle, insiders suggest. Every little piece of information is vital, said the source.

The lorry is believed to have been in the queue of cars behind the roadworks, close to the site of the crash.

A bus with more than 50 schoolchildren on board skidded and overturned on the road, killing five children and injuring dozens of others. Two cars were also centrally involved in the accident and the drivers of both were injured.

A garda spokesman said: "It is requested that this lorry driver, or anyone who may know him, contact the gardaí at Navan Station on 046 9079930. There is no description of the driver or his lorry available apart from the fact that it was most probably a sand or gravel lorry."

As the investigation into the crash continues, it has emerged the Health and Safety Authority ordered Meath County Council to close down the roadworks on the Kentstown Road where the crash happened.

The prohibition notice was issued last Friday after the HSA inspectors visited the site and concluded there was a serious risk to life. There was no health and safety plan in place or a supervisor appointed to oversee the works.

These were put in place by Monday but the HSA inspectors then raised further objections in relation to the risk to local access traffic from construction vehicles.

The road is being resurfaced and questions have been asked about various aspects of the works, including the positioning of the temporary traffic lights and whether signs were erected warning of a temporary surface or speed restrictions.
