Sex abuse victim fears for his son

A MAN sexually abused by a Brother of Charity broke down yesterday when he said he feared for the safety of his son after a judge ruled the Brother was to be released.

Sex abuse victim fears for his son

Alan Carroll (51), who was repeatedly abused by James Kelly - whose religious name is Brother Ambrose - said he was furious his attacker would be released from jail on November 23 to an undisclosed institution.

“This institution should have been named publicly so I know where he is. I have a son, David, who is 10 years old and a daughter Rachel. That fella (Br Ambrose) could be living just two miles from my home. I want to protect my children as much as I can. I don’t want to see them go through what I did,” Mr Carroll, who now lives in Tallaght, Co Dublin, said. Mr Carroll said he didn’t have any sympathy for Br Ambrose’s age or infirmity. He is now 77-years-old.

“He shouldn’t have been released. He should have spent at least another 10 years in jail. Brother Ambrose terrified me. He threatened me, he bullied me and told me if I said anything I’d be for it. No young child deserves to be threatened,” Mr Carroll said.

Another victim, John Barrett, who is originally from Midleton, Co Cork, said he had tried to commit suicide five times since escaping the clutches of Br Ambrose in 1968. He was repeatedly raped, with the abuse starting when he was just eight years old.

“He may be a feeble man now, but did he have sympathy for me when he raped me? His age or health shouldn’t be taken into consideration. I think he should have died in jail,” he added.
