Pub ATM may be shut down

The money-vending machine in McSorley’s nightclub in Killarney, Co Kerry has already sparked a furious reaction from local councillors who described it as a drink-link.

Killarney Town Council confirmed yesterday that it has asked McSorley’s proprietor, John Bowler, to apply for planning permission, or else remove the ATM from the foyer of the nightclub.

Town clerk Michael O’Leary said the machine needs to be cleared by the town planners.

“The installation of the ATM is considered a change in the use of the building and you need planning permission for that,” Mr O’Leary said.

The controversial ATM was placed in the popular club last month but it triggered an angry response from politicians who claimed it exploited young people.

“This machine means people will be able to spend more money on drink. We’ve enough of problems with alcohol already without this,” Independent town councillor, Donal O’Grady said.

Last week Mark Roden, MD of Easy Cash, the company that installed the ATM, said the machine didn’t need planning permission. Easy Cash also insisted it wasn’t charging any extra feesMr Bowler defended the machine and said it allowed women to withdraw money in safety.

Mr Bowler also said he would close the ATM if a bank agreed to put a similar facility close to his premises on College Street.
