Aoife’s ensemble is first past the post on Ladies’ Day

BRIGHT sunshine, large crowds and a dazzling array of colourful styles set the scene for Ladies’ Day at Listowel Races yesterday.

Aoife’s ensemble is first past the post on Ladies’ Day

Local woman Aoife Hannon, a sister of star jockey Jim Culloty, was first in the competition for the best-dressed lady, while her husband, Maurice, was among those short-listed in the male fashion contest.

Aoife impressed in a cerise and grey ensemble, with a missoni print dress and headgear of cerise and peacock plumes.

A grey, pinstripe tailored jacket, with black bag and matching accessories gave her the perfect finishing touches.

Competition sponsor Mary O’Flaherty, of Listowel’s Chic boutique, described Aoife’s outfit as ‘absolutely stunning’ saying she stood out from the crowd.

“The judges went for a designer look and they certainly got that from a very worthy winner.

“Overall, there was a great mix of fashion across all ages and styles. The competition is getting better each year as more women make an effort to dress for the occasion.”

Judges were Marian Murphy-Cooney, a young Tipperary designer, and Italian Giordana Giache, a Limerick-based designer.

Nine runners-up each received a Tipperary Crystal presentation.

The day’s big race, the €35,805 Listowel Lartigue Handicap Hurdle, was won by joint favourite Don’t Be Bitin, rode by Ruby Walsh.

Being held for the 147th time, Listowel Races continues to draw the crowds and is traditionally seen as the end-of-harvest celebration for farmers from all over Munster and beyond.

Among the faces in the crowd yesterday was former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, a regular at the Fealeside track, while Taoiseach Bertie Ahern may attend today.

Largest crowds of the week are also expected today for the main race of the seven-day meeting, the €150,000 Guinness Kerry National.
