New booklet for women affected by violence

A NEW guide to services including helplines and shelters for women in Cork and Kerry affected by violence was launched yesterday.

New booklet for women affected by violence

The booklet and card gives information about the help provided by a dozen agencies in the region.

They were published by the Southern Regional Committee on Violence against Women (SRCVAW) in Cork and Kerry.

It comprises 12 organisations funded by the Health Service Executive (HSE) Southern Area including Mná Feasa, the Sexual Violence Centre, Cork, the One Stop Shop in Cork, HSE Southern Area Domestic Violence Social Work Project, the West Cork Women Against Violence, the YANA Project in North Cork, the Cuanlee Refuge, the ADAPT Refuge in Tralee, the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, the Tralee Women’s Resource Centre, the Open Door Network, also in Tralee, and the Good Shepherd Services.

Chairperson of the SRCVAW, Catherine Casey, said domestic and sexual violence affects everybody either directly or indirectly.

“Our hope in launching this information booklet and card is that it will help women who want to break their silence to access the services in Cork and Kerry.”

“The information booklet is also a vital resource for organisations working with women. We feel that it is very important that women living with the threat of violence have access to both information and services”

The information booklet and card will be widely distributed by gardaí, GPs, information centres, voluntary organisations, social welfare offices, and health centres.

The SRCVAW was established in 1988 as result of a number of recommendations made by the National Task Force on Violence Against Women.

Copies of the information booklet and card are available from the HSE Southern Area by ringing (021) 492 3980.
