Gardaí rule out foul play after doctor’s death
The body of Dr Mohamed Khalilur Rahman had been discovered in suspicious circumstances on the banks of the Garavogue River shortly after 6am.
However, a post mortem carried out by State Pathologist Marie Cassidy has revealed the father of one had died of natural causes.
Gardaí initially feared Dr Rahman may have been the victim of a violent assault because of a pool of blood from a serious head wound.
But gardaí believe Dr Rahman died after striking his head off a railing when he collapsed while out jogging at Rockwood Parade, a short distance from his home in Sligo.
Dr Rahman, who was in his 40s and comes originally from Bangladesh, worked at Sligo General Hospital where he had earned a reputation as a good Samaritan. His wife and four-year-old daughter were believed to have been in England when they learned of the tragedy.
A group of teenagers on their way home from a party came across his body. Two of the group attempted to revive the victim but failed. He died at the scene.
Gardaí believe his body may have been lying on the ground for around an hour.
They have asked anyone who was passing the Rockwood Parade area of Sligo to contact them on 071-9157000.
Friends said Dr Rahman was a dedicated medic adored by his patients.
