Masterpiece worth €1.9m returns home after 100 years

THE National Gallery yesterday unveiled a major new €1.9 million acquisition — a painting which returns to the country after spending nearly 100 years in private collections in the United States.

Landscape With A Portrait Of A Youth And His Tutor On Horseback, by the 17th Century Dutch Master, Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) was once owned by the Dukes of Leinster, James Fitzgerald or his son, William and probably hung in Leinster House.

It was purchased by the Royal Dublin Society in 1815.
