Diversions in place as gardaí probe fatal crash

John O’Callaghan, 62, of Ballymacquin East, Abbeydorney, Co Kerry, died when the 52-seater bus he was driving crashed into the corner of JK O’Connor’s drapery premises, at Lower Main Street, Castleisland, early on Monday morning.

The landmark building, also known as the Market House, is over 250 years old and is on a list of protected structures. Part of the gable collapsed in the accident.

The chimney has been removed and the gable has been cordoned off. Engineers have examined the building for any further damage, arising from the accident.

Owner Cormac O’Mahony extended sympathy to the late Mr O’Callaghan’s family and said he hoped to reopen for business before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, the woman who died in a single vehicle accident, near Johnstown, Co Kilkenny, on Sunday morning, has been named as Ann Sheehan, a 49-year-old mother of four, from Lissyconnor, Rathmore, Co Kerry.

Her husband, Donie, who was driving the car, and two of their daughters, Suzanne and Niamh, were taken to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny, after the accident but were not seriously injured.

The family had been returning from holidays when their car hit a wall.

The late Mrs Sheehan worked as a public health nurse in the Rathmore area.

Her death brings to three the number of accidental deaths of Kerry people since the weekend.

Two-year-old James Patrick Dunleavy, of Ballyfinnane, Firies, died in an accident involving a car at his home on Saturday and was laid to rest yesterday, in Ardcrone cemetery, Currans.
