Catch of the day: Ken and Dessie land first salmon

THE thrill of landing the first salmon on the opening day of the new season in Killarney, yesterday fell to seasoned angler Ken O’Neill, from Milltown, Co Kerry.

Just before 9am, he hooked an eight-pounder at the mouth of the river Laune, using a worm.

Making it a memorable day for the O’Neill family, Ken’s brother, Dessie, caught the second salmon, weighing 7½lbs, using a minnow, about ten minutes later.
