THE State is facing a €50m compensation bill from people affected by asbestos.

Compensation for asbestos could hit €50m

Almost 500 cases have been lodged by people who claim they became ill after coming into contact with asbestos in State-owned buildings. Eleven cases have been settled to date at a cost of €1m. The final bill could top €50m.

Schools, Government offices, military buildings and garda stations are being inspected for traces of asbestos in a programme that began more than three years ago.
