Booklet warns of potential problems with breast implant surgery

THE potential problems associated with breast implant surgery are detailed in a new booklet launched yesterday by Tánaiste and Health Minister Mary Harney.

Booklet warns of potential problems with breast implant surgery

The booklet is a response to a call by both the European Parliament and European Commission for more information for women considering breast implant surgery.

Up to 80% of breast implant surgery in the EU is cosmetic. It is one of Ireland’s most popular cosmetic surgery treatments, with an estimated one in 30 women undergoing the procedure at a cost of around €5,500 per person.

The booklet provides information on breast implant surgery covering:

* Reasons for having a breast implant.

* Are implants the only option?

* Types of implants.

* Short and long-term effects of surgery.

* Choice of surgeon and issues to discuss with the surgeon.

Ms Harney said it was vital that anyone considering breast implant surgery could make an informed decision.

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery managing director, Halina Ashdown Sheils, said the booklet did not go far enough on the subject of aftercare, particularly given some women were opting to travel abroad for surgery and might experience problems when they return home.

The booklet will be circulated to plastic surgeons, breast care nurses and GPs and is available from the department on 1890 200 311.
