Labour says PDs failing to live up to their role
Delivering his opening address to the meeting of the parliamentary party, Mr Rabbitte said the Government was out of touch and unaccountable and his party had to provide an alternative.
As junior coalition partners, the PDs were remaining silent on a wide variety of issues being handled by Fianna Fáil and are only along for the ride, Mr Rabbitte said.
Tánaiste Mary Harney had nothing to say on the profoundly serious issue of the collapse of the child abuse commission and the resignation of Justice Mary Laffoy, he said.
According to Mr Rabbitte, Labour’s job was to challenge the Government and rededicate itself to getting rid of what he described as an incompetent partnership.
Around 25 of the 27 members of the Parliamentary Party are attending the two-day conference at the Ferrycarrig Hotel, Wexford.
Also last night, the TDs, Senators and sole MEP got an appraisal of the party’s position in the present political climate and the changes in society.
The State We’re In was the title of the briefing by Labour Party chef de cabinet Fergus Finlay.
The briefing was based on research commissioned by the party.
Today, the party will focus on policy development, the local and European elections, the new Dáil term and a recruitment campaign.
