Council set to restrict developments in estates

CURBS are to be imposed by Killarney Town Council on the building of offices and apartments in housing estates.

Developers are starting to convert - or demolish - houses and are building apartments and offices in prime estates because they can make more money that way, Independent councillor Michael Courtney claimed.

“Before the rot sets in, we should stop it. I don’t want to see housing estates in Killarney ruined,” he said.

Mr Courtney proposed the deletion of the term “open for consideration” in the section of Killarney town development plan covering residential areas.

Town clerk Michael O’Leary warned removing this condition could eliminate acceptable developments. He said he would bring a report before council to make the rule tighter.
