Happy couple set for GAA skirmish
That’s the time of the kick-off in the Munster senior football final in Killarney and, as they are both GAA followers, they can’t wait for the match to start. However, it will be something of a trial separation for Tina, 33, and Larry, 35, as they will be watching from opposite ends of Fitzgerald stadium.
“I’m from Limerick and Larry is from Kerry,” says Tina, “so you can imagine the dilemma.”
“We have separate tickets,” explains Larry. “I will be with the Kerry supporters, of course, and Tina will be with the Limerick crowd.”
Living in the village of Duagh, near the Limerick border, they even work in their respective counties. Just for the craic, Tina, a clerical officer with Limerick County Council in Rathkeale, even bought her husband a Limerick jersey. Of course, like a true son of the Kingdom, he hasn’t a notion of wearing it.
“I will be in the Kerry colours as usual,” says Larry who runs a hardware and farm supply business from his food store in Duagh. Tina knows her husband would never dream of switching sides. “I know that if he ever wore a Limerick jersey he would never be able to show his face again to all the Kerry supporters,” she says with a giggle.
Larry, meanwhile, has even made sure the couple’s young son will grow up to follow his father’s team. “He’s already a Kerry supporter,” says Larry. “His grandmother even bought him a Kerry jersey.”
One thing they can agree on, though, is where the match-goers will sate their thirst. “My parents have a pub in Duagh. It’s a big GAA bar and that’s where everyone going to the match will be in the morning. Then we will come back there afterwards for the post mortem.”
So which team will win?
“Kerry, of course,” says Larry with certainty. Naturally, Tina disagrees. “Limerick will show them a thing or two,” she insists.
Supposing it’s a draw? “It will give us another day out,” says Larry.
