THE Easter Rising was commemorated in Mallow yesterday with parades and wreath-laying ceremonies.

Thomas Davis Pipe Band led a parade of politicians, members of the public and the Civil Defence from the courthouse to Mass celebrated in St Mary’s Church by Fr Declan

Mallow deputy mayor Cllr Noel O’Connor recited the 1916 Proclamation when the parade paused at the entrance to the church grounds.

Fianna Fáil later held its annual commemoration at the Republican Plot in Gouldshill Cemetery.

There, Limerick West TD John Cregan laid a wreath and delivered an oration.

Cllr Dan Joe Fitzgerald presided. Anne Scully recited a decade of the rosary in Irish and Adrian Long read the 1916 Proclamation.

Pipers from the Thomas Davis Band took part in the ceremony and the attendance included Cllr Frank O’Flynn, a member of Fianna Fáil’s national executive.

In an earlier Fianna Fáil ceremony, Cllr David Willis laid a wreath at the National Monument on Mallow Bridge, where he also recited a decade of the rosary.

Sinn Féin held a commemorative march to the Republican Plot at Gouldshill Cemetery, where Youghal councillor Sandra McLellan, the party’s Cork East general election candidate, delivered an oration.

Cllr Willie O’Regan presided. Melissa Mullane read the Proclamation and wreaths were laid by

Bernette Tam on behalf of Sinn Féin, and by Martin Mullane on behalf of the republican movement, whose Easter message was read by David O’Mahony.

Pipers from the Thomas Davis Band took part in the ceremony, which included a minute’s silence in memory of the patriot dead.
