Flynn could face €2.5m bill for RTÉ libel case

FORMER Fianna Fáil TD Beverly Flynn could eventually face a legal bill of €2.5 million following her unsuccessful libel action against RTÉ in 2001.

Ms Flynn’s political career will be jeopardised if she is unable to meet the bill. Should the independent Mayo TD declare bankruptcy, for example, she would have to resign her seat, as the Electoral Act does not allow an undischarged bankrupt to serve in the Dáil or be elected to it.

RTÉ was yesterday awarded legal costs of €1.6m arising out of its successful defence of the action in the Supreme Court.
