Signs leave drivers in twilight zone

APTLY named the “inner and outer orbital routes,” the new signs system for Dublin continued to leave most people in the twilight zone on its second day in operation yesterday.

Irate tourists, who find the national road signs system bewildering, believe the new signs have only made a complicated system worse.

Chicago-born Theresa Plunkett said she had been going to Dublin on holidays for several years but found the new signs completely baffling. She was totally confused by the different colouring used in the signs - and had no idea where to go to secure an information leaflet.

“I drove in from Drumcondra this afternoon and it was really very difficult,” she said. “I ended up getting lost. You don’t really know where you can turn and can’t turn.” Boris Ilijev from Czech Republic said he was totally baffled by the signs and could not comprehend what purple and orange meant.

When asked did he understand the signs, Dermot O’Brien, from Rathgar, who has considerable experience of driving abroad, said “absolutely not.”

“I have no idea what they are supposed to mean. I have driven in several countries but have never seen anything as confusing as these signs,” said Mr O’Brien.
