Detectives have spent a number of weeks examining a large amount of closed circuit television (CCTV) footage recorded in different parts of the city on the night of the attack.
They are confident the video footage and the assistance of the public will result in the apprehension of a suspect in the coming weeks.
“Gardaí are reviewing the videos to retrace the movements and see can we identify the person involved. We’re hopeful we’ll come up with a positive result,” Sergeant John McDonald of Waterford garda station said.
The woman in her early 20s has been interviewed by gardaí a number of times since the incident, and gardaí say she remains traumatised by the ordeal. She was attacked and raped at about 1.20am after a night out clubbing in the city on December 9.
A man in his 20s is understood to have accompanied her from a nightclub in the John Street area of the city and assaulted her in a doorway of a shop as they walked along the Quay together.
Video footage of a number of premises showing the pair walking in Parnell Street, the Mall and the Quay are being examined as part of the investigation. “We haven’t yet been able to identify a culprit, but we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this woman was raped,” said Sgt McDonald.
People who assisted the woman following the attack have also come forward to help gardaí with their inquiries.
“We are still actively conducting inquiries with a view to establishing as much as we can about the culprit,” added Sgt McDonald.
