Criminals’ cash set to be handed to State

MILLIONS of euro raised from the sale of assets seized from Ireland’s most notorious criminals is set to be handed over to the State from next month.

Brian Meehan last week became the first person to be served notice that the proceeds of his criminal activity will be handed over to the Department of Finance pending a final High Court application.

Criminal Assets Bureau officers visited Meehan in Portlaoise Prison and told him of their intention to pass on the cash to the State as allowed under the 1996 Proceeds of Crime Act.
