A MOBILE home owner claimed yesterday she was forced out of a holiday retreat in West Cork after chemically treated human excrement was spread beneath her caravan.

The incident occurred at the former Little Island caravan park in Ownahincha.

Mary Matthews said the discharge of human waste beneath her two-bed Roadmaster mobile home was a sick act.

"There's an appalling stench and I can't stay here tonight," said the Cork widow, a mother of five grown-up children. Gardaí were called to the site and statements were last night made at Clonakilty Garda Station by Ms Matthews and a family friend, Tony O'Donovan, who had raised the alarm.

It emerged last night that chemically treated human effluent was discharged at the site yesterday afternoon.

"I love Ownahincha," she said, "and although I was practically alone on the site this weekend, I will continue to come here.

"I'm very saddened and shocked that this incident happened but it's not the first time. I was in a friend's house at the time and I was alerted that something was happening at the site with a muck spreader. It's excrement in a liquid form and it's disgusting. It was spread on the concrete underneath the caravan. I just can't stay here now."
