Mr McManus said: “Through the generosity of so many people, in excess of €30m was raised for local charities supporting the hospice, the disadvantaged and the Mid-West Regional Hospital.”

Mr McManus said that almost 50,000 spectators watched the great golfers of the world at Adare Manor Hotel Golf course.

“They came from all parts of Ireland and helped contribute to the fund raising venture,” he said.

Funds raised by the event will be dispersed among more than 30 Limerick charities and organisations over the coming months.

As well as the money raised for these causes, the event was also a major boost to tourism in the Mid-West.

Hotels in the region received huge bookings and the coverage given to the event was also seen as a major plus for the region.

The JP McManus golf classic has now raised over €60m since its inception in 1990.

Tiger Woods led the galaxy of golfing superstars who took part in the tournament.

This was his second appearance at the classic.

“I just come here for my good friend, JP,” he said.

Over €16m was raised from the charity auction at the gala dinner, which was attended by over 1,200 people.

One person paid €10m for a number of lots which included a round of golf with Tiger Woods, and golfing memorabilia which included the Ryder Cup jacket belonging to the late Payne Stewart. The following night a major party was thrown for all the volunteer workers who helped during the event.
