Heroin found during robbery investigation

DETECTIVES investigating an armed robbery have unearthed one of the biggest recent drugs seizures in Cork.

Heroin found during robbery investigation

Gardaí were probing the taking of more than 20,000 euro in wages from a contractor in the Knocknaheeny area of the city on Friday night when they made the find on Tuesday morning.

It was followed by a significant amount of heroin being seized in the southside just a few hours later by the city’s drugs unit.

The kilo of cocaine, with an estimated street value of 100,000 euro, was found during a search of a house in Gurranabraher. It is believed it belonged to a big player in the illegal drugs trade on the northside, although the men arrested are not major drugs figures.

A 28-year-old from the area and a 23-year-old from Togher were questioned at Gurranabraher station after officers found the drugs in two different parts of the house. Both men were released but gardaí will be sending files to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The investigation into last Friday evening’s robbery, in which a man was held at gunpoint inside his own vehicle, is continuing. Gardaí have retrieved some cash believed to have been taken in the robbery, but no arrests have yet been made.

The heroin found at a house in the Summerhill South area of the city on Tuesday night followed a surveillance operation by the divisional drugs team.

A man and a woman, both in their mid-20s, were arrested and later released after the seizure, worth around 6,000 euro on the street.
