THE smell of popcorn mingled with the scent of flowers from well-wishers yesterday as one of the country’s oldest cinemas closed down.

Dozens of bouquets were stacked up in the foyer of the Ormonde Cinema in Midleton, Co Cork, from people wishing Pat and Kathleen Greene well in their retirement.

The couple from Castlemartyr, who have run the 1947-built Ormonde on Broderick Street since 1980 and who have owned it since 2000, screened their last film on Sunday night.
