A THREATENED strike next week by 1,000 ESB workers over the retention of apprentice electricians has been described by management as unwarranted.

ATGWU members have vowed to walk out on Monday morning amid claims many of the apprentices will not be given jobs at the end of training because so many independent contractors have been employed by the company.

The ESB said there will be no immediate threat to power generation and supply, but there may be disruption to repair services if there is a local breakdown.
