PRIVATE commercial interests should be allowed operate a rail freight service because of a “lack of interest” by Iarnród Éireann, a Kerry councillor has urged.

Super trucks and jumbo trucks were dominating and terrifying the roadways, as well as causing pollution, claimed Michael Gleeson, of the South Kerry Independent Alliance.

He said the railways were probably one of our greatest assets, but were massively underused.
