Cobh centre millionth visit

ONE of Cork’s most successful tourist attractions is preparing to host its millionth visitor next month.

The magical figure will be reached at Cobh Heritage Centre which, unlike many other such attractions is paying its own way.

The centre, which is housed in a restored Victorian railway station, had 105,000 visitors last year.

The story of Cobh’s unique origins, its history and legacy are dramatically recalled at The Queenstown Story and the centre has built on its success over the years by continuously adding to the exhibitions.

Recent additions include a new permanent exhibition which deals with the harbour, Martello Towers, defence and the Irish Naval Service.

Debbie Walsh, who manages the centre, said staff were looking forward to rolling out the red carpet for their millionth visitor.

“It will be a wonderful achievement for us and a tribute to all the staff and management who have managed to make The Queenstown Story such a magnificent success since its creation 10 years ago,” Ms Walsh said.

The centre is run by a board of directors which is chaired by Mr Con O’Conaill and includes a number of public representatives and officials from Cork County Council.

It was visited yesterday by Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O’Donoghue who said he was very impressed with the facility.

Deputy Mayor of County Cork, Cllr John Mulvihill, also a member of the board, said as a Cobh man he welcomes the minister’s visit and he is proud to be associated with the centre, which has played its own part in putting Cobh on the map.
