Mary another victim of violent female murder

THE murder of Mary Walsh brings to five the number of women who have suffered a violent death this year in Ireland.

Mary another victim of violent female murder

Her death comes just two months after the murder of a Malawian woman, whose body was found on a riverbank in neighbouring Co Kilkenny.

The body of Ms Paiche Onyemaechi, aged 25, a daughter of the chief justice of Malawi, was found wrapped in plastic bags on the banks of the river Pil near Piltown on July 23.

Investigating gardaí confirmed she suffered a violent end: there were a number of marks on her body and her head was detached from her body.

A file is being prepared for the DPP following the release of two men who were questioned in connection with her death, but the case remains open.

Gardaí are still looking to speak to her 31-year-old Nigerian-born husband, Mr Chika Onyemaechi. Ms Unyolo-Onyemaechi shared a house in Waterford city with him and their two children. He has not been seen since his wife’s body was identified and failed to attend her funeral.

“We are still concerned for his well-being, no one has seen him,” an investigating garda said.

In May the body of 37-year-old Lorraine Crowley was discovered by her niece in a bedroom of her house in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

Ms Crowley, who was a mother-of-one, was lying fully clothed on a bed with bruising to her neck and face. It is believed she may have been strangled.

Mr Keith Hannigan, aged 29, of Philip Street, Waterford city was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with offences under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act in connection with the death.

He is due to appear before Dungarvan District Court next week.

Earlier this year grandmother Joan Casey, aged 64 was shot dead in her home in Tallaght, Co Dublin, when two masked men broke into her home.

The mother of five was shot dead in her bedroom at Avonbeg Park shortly after 6am on April 3 and died from a single chest wound.

Gardai believe she was the mistaken victim in a family feud. Two young men, Timothy Rattigan and Conor Grogan, both aged 25 and with addresses in Tallaght, were later charged with her murder.

Just over a week ago the body of 19 year-old Lynette McKeown was found dumped in a shed in Eadestown, Co Kildare.

The teenage mother had been missing from the home she shared with her partner and 20-month-old daughter in Tallaght for 10 days when her partially decomposed body was found in a derelict house.
