Security warning after €10,000 cheque stolen

BANK customers were warned yesterday to take special precautions when sending cheques by post after the ombudsman said one customer lost €10,000 when his cheque was intercepted en route to the bank.

The banking problem solver could do nothing for the customer in question and said all cheques going through the postal system should be crossed.

Crossing a cheque involves drawing two lines across the front and writing special instructions that the cheque can only be lodged to a specified bank account.
