Festival showcases Europe’s youngest poets and painters

The pretty seven-year-old is one of the youngest of hundreds of children from 25 European states whose poems and paintings have been published in a multi-lingual book launched in Cork’s Tigh Filí arts centre last night.

Lilly’s poem, Medicine, is on page 111. It reads:

“I am sick, I am sick,

I say I am sick,

A choo, a choo, a choo.”

It is her fourth year being published in the Eurochild book.

The ninth annual Eurochild Book of Art and Poetry is the latest project by the unique Cork-based Eurochild project that fosters and encourages a love of art and literature in European children under 12.

“We got poems from children all over Europe. They were written on the back of cereal boxes and everything. It was great,” Eurochild’s Breda Dooley said.

It is hoped that children from all over Europe who contributed to the book will come to Cork for the launch of next year’s 10th anniversary book, she said.

“But we need a sponsor. For example, eight-year-old Maja Stumberger from Slovenia who designed the cover of this year’s book couldn’t attend last Friday night’s launch. We are looking for a sponsor to work with us for 2005. We are hoping to bring all the kids who contributed to Cork next year.”

The launch also marked the start of the Eurochild International Festival, which runs from today until Wednesday.

The festival will include three days of workshops, ranging from dance and drumming to graffiti art.
