Gardaí investigate fatal road accident in Louth

The victim’s body was found in the smouldering remains of a car found in Rassan, in Hackballscross, at around 9.15am.

The car, which was obscured from view, was believed to have left the road several hours previously.

The remains were so extensively burned that the sole occupant may have to be identified by tracing the chassis number of the car.

This macabre find brings the weekend death toll on Irish roads to six, and the number killed on the roads so far this year to 102.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been established, a garda spokesman said. The body was removed to Louth County Hospital.

It is understood the car was a Vauxhall.
