EPA probes distillery sludge spillage

THE Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched another probe into a massive overnight spillage of sludge from a distillery into Cork harbour.

Approximately 95,000 gallons of sludge was discharged to a sewer by Midleton-based Irish Distillers last Thursday night.

The sludge, comprising organic matter and suspended solids, then discharged at Rathcoursey Point into the harbour. It was not clear last night whether marine life had been affected.
