Mourners pay final respects to bus tragedy victim

KEVIN GARRY, one of five people killed in the Wellington Quay bus tragedy, was buried yesterday following a funeral Mass in his home town.

Hundreds of mourners, led by his three sisters and one brother, gathered in the Church of St Charles Borromeo in Leixlip.

They were told of Mr Garry’s compassion for others and how, as a worker with the Salvation Army, he helped to alleviate the suffering of the less fortunate.

“To Kevin it was more than just a job. Where people would turn a blind eye to this odd thing, he’d go the extra mile,” a co-worker said.

Mr Garry, who was returning home after a shift at the Cedar House hostel in the centre of Dublin, survived after being hit by a bus 15 years ago. He battled his way out of a coma and learned to walk again.

Fr Phillip Corcoran paid tribute to his courage in battling back and getting on with his life after the first accident. Mr Garry, a single man, is survived by his sisters Josie, Mary and Olive, and brother Enda.

The body of Margaret Traynor, a 59-year-old mother of four, was removed to the Church of Our Lady Immaculate in Darndale for a service last night. She will be buried at Glasnevin Cemetery at noon today following a funeral Mass.

Mother-of-three Teresa Keatley, 43, from Ballymun, will also be buried in Glasnevin today. Her remains were removed last night to Our Lady of Victories in Ballymun at 5.45pm.

Kathleen Gilton, aged 69, from Maynooth, will be buried on Saturday. Her remains will be removed to St Mary’s Church, Maynooth this evening. She will be buried in Laraghbryan Cemetery after 11am Mass on Saturday.

The body of 33-year-old Vasyl Tyminskyy was returned to his native Ukraine yesterday, accompanied by his wife Svitlana and daughter Khrystyna.

The five were killed when a bus mounted a pavement on Wellington Quay. Seven women remain in a stable condition in hospital.
