IRELAND is risking having to pay huge daily fines for failing to implement EU legislation on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

Nine months ago the European Court found against Ireland but yesterday the Government had still not reported the measures it is taking to protect people and the environment.

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas sent a final warning letter to the Government yesterday giving them another two months to act.
