Capital of Culture scam warning

THE organisers of Cork’s term as European Capital of Culture have been hit by a merchandise scam.

Capital of Culture scam warning

A warning has been issued by Cork 2005 telling businesses and the general public to be wary of the scam. They also want to be contacted by anyone approached by the group behind the scam.

The ruse came to light after a number of businesses were approached by a group touting unofficial Cork 2005 merchandise.

The group also offered businesses a range of opportunities to advertise in various publications.

Cork 2005 became aware of the scam after one business sought clarification from Cork 2005 headquarters on Pope’s Quay.

John Kennedy, director of Cork 2005 said: “We are anxious that individuals and businesses are not misled.

“People who receive unsolicited mail without the official Cork 2005 logo should realise that the products and opportunities on offer do not have the approval or support of Cork 2005.”

A Cork 2005 spokesperson said they were aware of at least one company targeted by the scam.

“Any such approaches should not be entertained.

“Official Cork 2005 approaches to businesses are made from this office at Pope’s Quay,” she said.

Businesses or individuals who think they may have been targeted by the scam should contact Cork 2005’s headquarters on Pope’s Quay on 021-455 2005.

Meanwhile, final preparations are being put to the European Capital of Culture programme.

“The programme will include the best in architecture, crafts, dance, design, film, food, literature, music, sport, theatre and visual arts.

Full details of all events are due to be made public sometime in October.
