UNION officials are demanding extra protection for traffic wardens in Cork, after one of them was hit on the head with a hammer.

SIPTU, which represents the city’s wardens, is seeking a meeting with senior officials in City Hall to discuss an increasing number of attacks, the latest of which happened last Thursday.

A traffic warden, understood to be in his 30s, was attacked as he patrolled the George’s Quay area at lunchtime.
