Minister’s neighbour one of latest to die in road carnage
Geraldine Rafferty, aged 46, from Ballinlough, Cork, died when the car she was travelling in was involved in a head on collision near Urlingford at around 2.20pm on Sunday.
It is understood that she, her husband and two others were returning home from Dublin after watching Munster defeat Perpignan in the Heineken Cup quarter final when the accident took place.
The Ford Mondeo in which Ms Rafferty was a passenger was in a collision with another car of the same make. The driver of the other car, Michael Reid from Dunderrow near Kinsale in Co Cork, later died from his injuries at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny. Mrs Rafferty was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband and the other two passengers in the car were rushed to Cashel General Hospital. It is understood that their injuries are not life-threatening.
A spokeswoman for Minister Martin, who lives close to the Rafferty home, said he did not wish to comment at this time.
Mr Reid, who was married and who had celebrated his birthday just one day earlier, died a few hours later from his injuries.
Gardaí said the road was quite busy at the time of the accident and that they had already interviewed a number of witnesses.
“But we would like to speak to anybody who has not yet come forward and who feels they might have something to contribute to our inquiry,” a senior garda spokesman said.
One of the patients being treated in Our Lady’s Hospital in Cashel following the accident was discharged yesterday morning. The remaining patient, Mrs Rafferty’s husband, was due to be discharged last night.
Anybody with information is asked to contact Templemore garda station at (0504) 32630.
The road was closed for a number of hours following the accident, which was attended by four ambulance units and members of the fire brigade from nearby Thurles, Urlingford and Freshford.
