THE Government wants the new Abbey Theatre to be a spectacular public landmark that will be Ireland’s equivalent of the Sydney Opera House.

Arts Minister John O’Donoghue believes the setting of the €150 million theatre at George’s Docks on the northern quays of the River Liffey will lend itself to a stunning piece of public architecture.

“I’m particularly excited about the Abbey Theatre site because of its location beside the river. It will lend itself to all sorts of exciting possibilities,” he said.
