Two killed in separate car accidents
A 42-year-old forestry worker died when he lost control of his car on a remote country road near his home in North Cork and in Co Galway 60-year-old woman was killed in a two car collision.
Neil Murphy from Goulnakeel, Rockchapel, Co Cork died after his car overturned near his home at 2.30am.
Three of Mr Murphy’s teenage children were also in the car at the time. After treatment for minor injuries they were released from Mallow General Hospital.
Local curate Fr Liam Foley, who attended the scene of the accident, said: “Everybody in the community is in complete shock. The only blessing is that the children escaped. Everybody’s thoughts are with them.”
Mary Dunleavy who died, a back seat passenger in a Toyota Corolla, was killed in the accident which occurred at Peake, Loughgeorge, Co Galway. The crash happened shortly before 3am yesterday on the main Tuam to Sligo road.
Ms Dunleavy, from Carheenlea, Turlough Mor, Co Galway, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three other occupants of the Toyota Corolla were injured. They were taken to Galway University Hospital. Their injuries are understood not to be life threatening. The driver of the other vehicle, escaped injury.
Gardaí said that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction, towards Tuam when the accident happened. Weather conditions at the time were said to be good and gardaí are not appealing for witnesses.
The 58-year-old woman who died when her car was involved in a collision with a truck was named as Mary Weldon from Station Road, Duleek, Co Meath. The accident happened at Bellewstown at 8.30am on Saturday.
Meanwhile, gardaí said two young women had a miracle escape when strong winds caused a tree to come crashing down on the main Dublin Cork road.
The women were travelling towards Cork when the tree blew out in front of their Toyota car at Kiltrislane, a half mile south of Mitchelstown, Co Cork.
