Homeless teen charged with assault of man found dead in disused shed
Paul Farrell, 46, died following an attack in Dublin’s north inner city sometime between last Wednesday and Thursday.
Mr Farrell, originally from Coolock, north Dublin, had suffered severe head injuries. His body was found in a disused garage in the Smithfield area last Thursday afternoon.
Yesterday, 19-year-old Gary Gleeson, a homeless man, was brought before Dublin District Court charged with assaulting the victim.
Det Insp John McMahon, of Bridewell Garda Station, gave evidence in respect of arrest, charge and caution.
Gleeson was charged at 9pm on Monday night with assaulting Mr Farrell between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon.
The court heard that Gleeson was originally from the southside of Dublin but was of no fixed abode.
Mr Farrell’s body lay on Coke Street for up to 18 hours before it was discovered by local people, who immediately contacted the nearby Bridewell Station.
The area beside the shed where the victim was found was being used as a storage facility for heavy plant and construction materials for the LUAS works.
Mr Farrell, who had an address on Buckingham Street, in the north inner city, was attacked after a night out in the city centre.
Gleeson was granted free legal aid by the court.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Dublin’s Cloverhill District Court next week.
