Colin Harbinson, aged 34, was also charged with possession of bomb-making equipment, ammunition and terrorist clothing.

The suspect spoke only to confirm he understood the charges during a hearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court.

Harbinson, of Highfield Drive, north Belfast, was arrested on Saturday during loyalist riots after an Orange Order parade was rerouted.

Gunmen opened fire on police and soldiers as the violence, which has continued for three nights, first erupted.

Harbinson faces three charges: possession of seven handguns and assorted ammunition with intent to endanger life; a length of piping and fireworks, also with intent to endanger life; and a balaclava which police believe was for use in terrorist acts.

Harbinson was remanded in custody to appear on October 11.
