Man shot in gangland attack ‘did not deserve to die’

THE girlfriend of a slain Dublin gangland figure buried on Saturday said yesterday he was not a crime lord and that he “did not deserve to die”.

It also emerged that armed detectives supported by the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) have stepped up patrols in the estates of west Dublin in a bid to control gang violence.

Jennifer Kiernan was in bed with Paul Cunningham, 23, and their three-year-old son, at their home in Drumheath Avenue, Mulhuddart, in the early hours of last Sunday week when two gunmen burst into the room and shot him.

She spoke about the ordeal yesterday.

“I’m not too good. Me and my child are going through pain.

“My fella was a decent fella that never shot anyone, never raised a gun to anyone and he never hired guns. Every single bit of what the papers said is bullshit. My fella did not deserve to die.

“He was no scumbag and he never shot no one in his life and didn’t deserve to have some f**king c**t to come into the bedroom, while he was in bed with me, and shoot him in front of me and my child,” she told the Star on Sunday.

She was so upset by some claims about her boyfriend that she called the Adrian Kennedy Show on Dublin’s FM104 last week.

“Crime lords, gang lords, he was nothing of the sort. He had no criminal convictions for anything like that,” she said. “He had previous convictions for driving with no tax and insurance.

“He wasn’t an angel, but he was no crime leader.

“He was genuine. He was a nice guy. He was a good-hearted man who loved me and his son. He did everything for me and our child.”

Gardaí maintain Mr Cunningham, who was a close friend of crime boss Declan Curran who died of a suspected heart attack in Cloverhill Prison over two weeks ago, was also a major gangland figure.

Mr Cunningham was buried in Mulhuddart Cemetery in west Dublin on Saturday. His remains were taken to the cemetery in a black, horse-drawn hearse.

At the same time, armed gardaí carried out raids on the homes of Mr Cunningham’s associates after getting information they were planning a series of retaliatory attacks.
