Gunman takes €750,000 in ATM raid
The armed robbery in Clondalkin, the third cash-in-transit robbery in one week, drew an angry response from Justice Minister Michael McDowell. It was a disturbing development and one that called for an effective response, he said.
"This robbery represents a disturbing development, particularly against the background of a significant reduction of 27% in this type of robbery last year, which requires an effective response," the minister said.
This morning, the minister will hold emergency talks with senior gardaí and representatives of private security cash firms to discuss recent heists.
"I want to establish quickly and clearly the state of compliance or otherwise of the whole cash-in-transit sector with the voluntary protocols hammered out last year for secure management of significant cash deliveries in this jurisdiction," the minister said.
Yesterday's robbery occurred on a busy street when the crew of a cash security company vehicle were making a delivery to the Bank of Ireland in Clondalkin shortly before midday.
A lone gunman hijacked the vehicle and forced the driver to take the vehicle to Commons Road in Clondalkin. The culprit then made away with a substantial amount of cash.
There were no shots fired during the incident and the security company vehicle, a beige Nissan Patrol, was being examined by garda technical experts.
