THE number of graduates out of work in the first year after leaving the country’s biggest university doubled in the last two years.

Just 1.3% of University College Dublin (UCD) primary degree holders who graduated in 2000 were seeking employment up to a year later, compared to 2.6% last year. The figure was 1% for 1998 graduates.

According to the UCD Careers and Appointments Office annual report 2002, the biggest proportion of job seekers were 5.5% of those who received an engineering degree last year. Almost 4% of those with law degrees were looking for a job, but all who received medicine, veterinary or related degrees were either working or in further study.
