TEACHERS have called on the Government to update a rule book with outdated and offensive language which has been in use in primary schools for more than 40 years.

The Rules for National Schools were introduced in 1965, but most of the contents have been replaced by regulations, legislation and circular letters to schools from the department.

The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) said the rules are so out of date schools could be forgiven for ignoring them completely, but they are often referred to by school inspectors and officials.
