Three arrested after man found beaten to death

TWO men and a woman were arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of a middle-aged man, beaten and left for dead under a bridge in the midlands.

Michael Chambers died after receiving severe head injuries in last month’s attack in Athlone. The suspects were arrested at 7.30am in the Athlone area, gardaí said under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and held for 12 hours. The 51-year-old’s body was found early in the morning of October 13 after a woman phoned gardaí to tell them there was a body lying on an underpass close to the Shannon banks.

He had been so badly beaten his family were unable to have an open coffin at his funeral. A post-mortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy showed he had been repeatedly beaten about the head, neck and back. Gardaí carried out house-to- house inquiries and later made a television appeal for information The dead man, originally from Portadown in the North, is believed to have stopped off in Athlone on his way home. Described as a drifter, he had been living for some time in Cork.
