Blair may visit Galway for EU meeting

SECURITY measures are being strengthened amid speculation that British Prime Minister Tony Blair will visit Galway during next week’s EU meeting.

Galway will host a meeting on Thursday involving all 25 EU member States and applicants.

A report in the Galway Advertiser says that protests are planned by left-wing organisations, and security around Galway for the three days of the conference will be extremely tight.

Mr Blair is expected to stay in an Eyre Square hotel.

Some 40 ministers for labour and social affairs will attend the meeting.

In November, Mr Blair’s son Nicky spent a weekend in Galway at a rugby tournament.
