THE GOVERNMENT yesterday set the spending limits for candidates in next autumn’s presidential elections at €1.3m - a figure criticised as too high by the Opposition.

Condemning the measure, which passed without debate by the Dáil yesterday, Labour leader Pat Rabbitte said such a high spending limit was unnecessary and undemocratic.

“No party other than the Taoiseach’s can afford anything like that,” he said.
